Quick Review: Rising of the Shield Hero

Okay, let’s not beat around the bush. I was going to do a series review of the anime but in the end I decided against it because I’d just list every problem I have with the series  (several of which I’ve already done posts on before) and give it a 5 or 6 if I had to give it a score. It’s not as bad as some things (Arifureta) and the controversy over the story was stupid, but the show in itself had a number of pacing problems, especially in the Pope fight.

The setting and premise had promise (and, as an action junkie I will admit the fights were decent at points) but it was squandered by the need for pandering to certain fetishes, wish-fulfillment, and the fact that the author bends over backwards to make the hero come out on top over the other three heroes. That doesn’t cut it for me since I don’t identify with Naofumi and don’t give him or the series a pass when I think they’ve screwed something up.

I’m not going to recommend you waste your time watching it unless you’re looking of an Isekai fix and don’t feel like thinking too deeply about things.  There are better alternatives out there with the exception of the shield gimmick. If I want to watch a story of people struggling to claw their way up and fight against the struggle of an unfair world, I’ll go watch Grimgar again. If I want to watch a village/civilization story, I’ll go watch Log Horizon.
