Boku no Hero Academia (Season 2) Episode 22 Review

…You know, this is actually a popular ship…

Episode 22 of Season 2 (or Episode 35 as a whole) of Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)  starts with Tsuyu and Tokoyami going against their teacher, Ectoplasm. Their first inclination is to use their respective powers to aid each other in running away from the teacher rather than face him head-on, using their brains rather than brawn and because they communicated with each other beforehand. However, Tokoyami has one critical weakness in that he can’t defend himself without Dark Shadow and that puts him at a disadvantage without Tsuyu covering his back.

Then Ectoplasm makes a huge clone and manages to trap them. So they have to resort to trickery and nail him with one of the handcuffs that Tsuyu had stored in her stomach. That nets them a win and a passing grade.

Iida and Ojiro are up next, going against Power Loader. They’re backed into a corner since neither can really harm him and they need to run. However, the teacher has set pitfalls all over the ground to trap them and forced Ojiro to piggyback Iida until the teacher collapses the ground. That forces Iida to toss Ojiro to the exit and thus they both pass.

Then its Momo and Todoroki’s turn, and they have to go against Eraserhead. Todoroki has her create small objects constantly so that they’ll know when he’s close by, since her Quirk will shut off due to his. Then Todoroki will distract him while she runs away…

Or at least that was the plan before Momo’s self-confidence issues pop-up and their teacher demonstrate why talking is not a free action. Todoroki immediately gets caught and then gets lectured by the teach before he goes after Momo. Her thoughts race as she doubts herself and she ends up running back to Todoroki.

Todoroki gives her some encouragement and she reveals that those dolls she made had flash-grenades in them, which briefly screws over Eraserhead. Then she takes the lead for a bit and comes up with a winning strategy, though she slips up at the last minute. They both pass as the episode ends with a glimpse of the next episode coming up.

Once more, Tsuyu being best girl is confirmed by her calm behavior and ability to support her allies. The fact that she could take things in and out of her stomach was actually something I’d forgotten, but it sure came in handy.

Then we get to Momo, who has a lot of hangups after what happened in the last few arcs. However, the issue is largely addressed by their teacher doing his job while acting like a ninja and harassing them. The beauty of it is that it was hinted until now that she was having self-doubts with the little pauses in her actions.

Anyway, next episode promises to be more entertaining with that question dropped in Uraraka at the end there, so that’s something I’m looking forward to.
